Born in Orange, NJ, Dr. James Lee Jr. had exposure to orthopaedic surgery at a young age with numerous trips accompanying his father to the Orange Memorial Hospital. Having grown up in South Orange, NJ, he completed his NJ education in the South Orange/Maplewood school district, graduating from Columbia High School in 1994. During high school, Dr. Lee competed for the Cougars playing basketball, tennis, and track and field.
Dr. Lee pursued his degree in Anthropology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he made the Dean's List, performed hundreds of hours of community service and was inducted into the Lamda Alpha Anthropology Honor Society. He also competed for the Eagles on the basketball court playing both point and shooting guard. One of the highlights of his Atlanta experience was representing the country of Djibouti in the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1996 summer Olympics as that nation’s placard bearer.
Dr. Lee received his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia, PA where he continued his community service career. He was named the Medical Society of Eastern Pennsylvania's recipient for Outstanding Scholarship and Volunteerism in 2000. During his time in the keystone state, Dr. Lee participated and helped plan health fairs focused on discrepancies in health care at the University of Pittsburgh, Temple University, Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and Jefferson Medical College.
Dr. Lee returned home in 2002 where he began his orthopaedic surgery residency at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. During his training at University Hospital in Newark, NJ, Dr. Lee was exposed to complex fracture management, tumor surgery, and innumerable clinical experiences that he draws upon to assist in patient care. In 2007, the year he graduated, Dr. Lee received the orthopedic department's award for "Most Outstanding Research Project" and presented the research at the Orthopedic Surgical and Trauma Society's annual meeting.
Feeling the need to enhance his sports medicine education, Dr. Lee completed a one year Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Nirschl Orthopaedic Center/Georgetown University program. During his training he served as Assistant Team Physician for George Mason University, Bishop O'Connell High School, and Washington and Lee High School all located in the D.C. metropolitan area. He trained with a number of sports medicine physicians allowing him exposure to complex shoulder arthroscopy and reconstruction, knee ligament reconstruction, hip arthroscopy and numerous elbow disorders.
Dr. Lee is currently the Director of the Sports Medicine Service at the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. He is also the Co-Team Physician for the Jersey Express of the American Basketball Association and looks forward to serving the Tri-State area.
